Who are those “they” people?
How come they are so —
Everywhere yet elusive,
In-your-face yet out-of-reach,
Critical yet unaccountable,
All-knowing yet ill-informed?
Combative and unbeatable, yet suggestible and distractable,
Fickle and unprincipled, yet insistent and intrusive,
Judgmental and unforgiving, yet hypocritical and uncaring?
And how come —
Their praise hardly lessens my guilt,
Their disapproval only fans my passion,
Their endorsement never validates my lie,
Their disagreement often verifies my truth?
Are they just my imagination,
And, in any case, forgettable?
Are they, in reality,
all me?
